Charles Darwin, British naturalist C013 / 6666

Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882), British naturalist. Darwin had briefly studied medicine and then trained in the clergy, but his interest was in natural history. In 1831 he set sail as naturalist on HMS Beagle, which was to provide the fieldwork for his famous book. His theory of evolution was published as On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection (1859). It caused a storm of controversy with Christian orthodoxy, as it contradicted the belief that species were created by God. This etching is by E. W. Andrews

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white etching captures the essence of Charles Darwin, a renowned British naturalist whose groundbreaking work revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. With his piercing gaze and distinguished features, Darwin's portrait exudes wisdom and intellectual curiosity. Born in 1809, Darwin initially pursued studies in medicine before finding his true passion in natural history. In 1831, he embarked on a momentous journey aboard HMS Beagle as its resident naturalist. This expedition would provide the foundation for his seminal book "On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection" published in 1859. Darwin's theory of evolution presented a radical departure from prevailing religious beliefs at the time. It posited that species evolved through a process called natural selection rather than being divinely created by God. Unsurprisingly, this revolutionary concept sparked intense controversy within Christian orthodoxy. The artist E. W. Andrews skillfully captured Darwin's likeness with intricate detail, emphasizing both his scientific prowess and profound impact on our understanding of biology and zoology. This monochrome artwork serves as an enduring testament to one man's relentless pursuit of knowledge and unwavering commitment to unraveling nature's mysteries. Displayed proudly by the Natural History Museum in London, this print invites viewers to delve into the life and legacy of Charles Robert Darwin – an extraordinary figure who forever changed our perception of life on Earth.
