Cockroachs head, light micrograph
Cockroachs head. Light micrograph of the head and mouthparts of the American cockroach (Periplaneta orientalis). The head consists of two hemispherical compound eyes (top centre). At the base of the eyes are the segmented antennae (upper left and upper right). The mouthparts are below the antennae. From centre, they are: the labrum; the two jaws or mandibles (either side of the labrum, with dark brown teeth); two jointed bifurcated maxillae (outside the mandibles); the labium (below the mandibles). The labium ends in the hypopharynx (bottom centre), with the paraglossa and labial palps on either side. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a cockroach's head and mouthparts, captured under a light microscope. The American cockroach (Periplaneta orientalis) takes center stage with its two hemispherical compound eyes, positioned prominently at the top center of the image. Just below these eyes lie its segmented antennae, which gracefully extend towards the upper left and right corners. Directly beneath the antennae, we are introduced to the fascinating world of its mouthparts. Starting from the center, we can observe various components: first is the labrum, followed by two jaws or mandibles on either side. These mandibles possess dark brown teeth that add an element of intrigue to this already mesmerizing composition. Moving outward from the mandibles are two jointed bifurcated maxillae, flanking them on both sides. Below these maxillae lies another crucial component called the labium, which terminates in a structure known as hypopharynx situated at bottom center. To further enhance our understanding of this remarkable creature's anatomy, paraglossa and labial palps adorn either side of the hypopharynx within what is known as a labial palp. With a magnification level set at x14 when printed at 10 centimeters across, this photograph allows us to appreciate not only nature's incredible diversity but also highlights how even seemingly small organisms possess complex biological structures worth exploring.
