Columbus ship replicas, 1905 C014 / 2045
Columbus ship replicas, circa 1905, in Jackson Park, Chicago, USA. These ships (from left: the Santa Maria, Nina, and Pinta) were used by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus on his 1492 voyage to discover the Americas. Made for the Worlds Columbian Exposition of 1893, the original replicas had sunk or been destroyed by the 1920s. In the background (centre) is La Rabida Childrens Hospital (originally a replica of the Spanish La Rabida Monastery). It was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1922. At lower left are men in a hand-cycle (left) and a tricycle (right). Photograph from a 1906 Detroit Publishing Company catalogue

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Columbus ship replicas, circa 1905, in Jackson Park, Chicago. These magnificent ships, from left to right: the Santa Maria, Nina, and Pinta, were meticulously crafted for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. They pay homage to Italian explorer Christopher Columbus' historic voyage in 1492 that led him to discover the Americas. In the background stands La Rabida Children's Hospital, originally a replica of the Spanish La Rabida Monastery. Destroyed by fire in 1922 but later rebuilt as a testament to resilience and hope. The photo also showcases two men with disabilities - one on a hand-cycle and another on a tricycle - symbolizing inclusivity amidst this historical backdrop. It reminds us that even in times of exploration and technological advancement like those represented by these ships, compassion towards individuals facing challenges remains paramount. As we gaze upon this image frozen in time, it serves as both a memorial to past achievements and an inspiration for future endeavors. The docked replicas stand proudly as tourist attractions while embodying cultural significance and maritime history. This photograph is not just about ships or hospitals; it encapsulates human triumphs over adversity throughout history. It invites viewers into an era where exploration met commemoration while highlighting the importance of accessibility for all individuals within our society.
