Columbus at Spains royal court, May 1486

Columbus at Spains royal court. 19th-century artwork of the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506, centre left, hand raised) seeking funding in May 1486 from Queen Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. The two ruled a union that became the Spanish Empire. Columbus had sought funding from European rulers for his plans to travel westwards to reach Asia and the East Indies. After several years of negotiation, he succeeded in getting Isabella and Ferdinand to finance his epic 1492 voyage that resulted in the discovery of the Americas. This artwork, from circa 1884, is by the Czech artist Vaclav Brozik (1851-1901)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork captures a significant moment in history as Christopher Columbus seeks funding from Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon at Spain's royal court in May 1486. The Italian explorer, depicted at the center with his hand raised, presents his ambitious plans to travel westwards in search of a new route to Asia and the East Indies. Columbus had tirelessly sought support from European rulers for several years before finally persuading Isabella and Ferdinand to finance his groundbreaking voyage. Their patronage would ultimately lead to the epic discovery of the Americas during Columbus' historic expedition in 1492. Painted by Czech artist Vaclav Brozik around 1884, this illustration showcases the regal setting where this pivotal meeting took place. The grandeur of the palace, adorned with ornate furnishings and attended by members of royalty, highlights the significance placed on exploration and discovery during this era. As we gaze upon this chromolithograph print today, we are reminded of Columbus' tenacity and vision that forever altered our understanding of geography. This image serves as a testament to human curiosity and determination while commemorating an important chapter in Spanish history – one that marked the beginning of Europe's Age of Exploration and laid the foundation for Spain's vast empire across continents.
