Common jellyfish
Common jellyfish (Aurelia aurita). This jellyfish, also known as the moon jellyfish, is found in waters throughout the world, mostly near coasts. It grows up to 40 centimetres in diameter. It swims horizontally, keeping its bell near the surface at all times. It is carnivorous, feeding on zooplankton. It uses its tentacles, which contain nematocysts (stinging cells), to capture some of its prey, although most of its food is trapped by the mucus lining on the bell. Its nematocysts are not strong enough to pierce human skin

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of a Common Jellyfish, scientifically known as Aurelia aurita or commonly referred to as the Moon Jellyfish. Found in coastal waters across the globe, this species can grow up to an impressive 40 centimeters in diameter. Its unique swimming style involves gracefully gliding horizontally while keeping its bell near the water's surface. As a carnivorous creature, this jellyfish sustains itself by feeding on zooplankton. It skillfully employs its tentacles, armed with nematocysts (stinging cells), to capture some of its prey. However, it primarily relies on the mucus lining on its bell to trap most of its food. It is worth noting that although these nematocysts possess stinging capabilities, they are not potent enough to pierce human skin. The intricate details captured in this photograph highlight the delicate and ethereal nature of this marine marvel. From its translucent bell adorned with vibrant hues reminiscent of moonlight reflections to its graceful tentacles extending into the depths below – every aspect invites us into a world teeming with biological wonders. Science Photo Library presents this awe-inspiring image that seamlessly combines artistry and scientific documentation. Delve into the realm of aquatic fauna through this single snapshot that encapsulates both curiosity and admiration for our diverse natural world.
