Corys shearwaters hunting mackerel
Corys sheerwaters (Calonectris diomedea) hunting blue jack mackerel (Trachurus picturatus). The mackerel have formed a bait ball due to the presence of short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). A bait ball is a defensive manoeuvre performed by schooling fish that makes it harder for the predators to pick out individuals. However, it can also draw the attention of other predators, some of which have learnt how to take advantage of the bait ball. Photographed in the Azores

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing moment in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Cory's shearwaters, graceful seabirds known as Calonectris diomedea, are seen hunting blue jack mackerel, Trachurus picturatus. The mackerel have formed a bait ball, a defensive strategy where they tightly group together to confuse predators like these shearwaters. The presence of short-beaked common dolphins, Delphinus delphis, has caused this remarkable phenomenon. A bait ball not only makes it difficult for predators to single out individuals but also attracts other opportunistic hunters who have learned how to take advantage of this collective behavior. Photographed in the stunning Azores archipelago, this image showcases the intricate dynamics of marine life and animal behavior. It highlights the cooperative nature within ecosystems as different species interact and adapt their strategies for survival. Underwater photography allows us to witness these incredible moments that occur beneath the surface. Christopher Swann's skillful capture reveals the beauty and complexity of nature's underwater world while shedding light on predator-prey relationships and biological defense mechanisms. This photograph serves as a reminder of both the fragility and resilience found in our oceans. It invites us to appreciate and protect these delicate ecosystems that harbor such diverse forms of life.
