This print captures a significant moment in space exploration history. In the frame, Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Mendez and Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Romanenko can be seen undergoing water landing training for their upcoming mission to the Salyut-6 space station. The year is 1980, and both men are fully immersed in their preparations at the renowned Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Star City, Russia. Mendez, a pioneering figure from Cuba, stands on the right side of the image. Born in 1942, he would become the first Cuban to venture into outer space. Standing beside him is Romanenko, born two years later in 1944. This mission marks his second out of three remarkable journeys beyond Earth's atmosphere. The Soyuz 38 spacecraft they trained for was successfully launched on September 18th of that year. Eight days later, after completing their mission aboard Salyut-6, these brave astronauts safely returned home. In this photograph taken during training sessions at Star City's prestigious facility, we witness these extraordinary individuals floating weightlessly as they simulate water landings wearing their iconic spacesuits. Their dedication and commitment to pushing technological boundaries serve as an inspiration for future generations aspiring to explore new frontiers. This historic snapshot serves as a testament to human ingenuity and international collaboration within the realm of space exploration during the late twentieth century – an era defined by scientific progress and awe-inspiring achievements that continue to shape our understanding of our place in the universe.
