EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork takes us back 75 million years ago to the Cretaceous period, where three fearsome marine predators ruled the Western Interior Seaway of North America. In this computer-generated illustration, we are presented with a trio of ancient creatures engaged in an underwater chase. On the left side, a non-descript invertebrate desperately tries to escape from its pursuers. Following closely behind is a sleek and agile Enchodus measuring at 4 feet (1.2 meters) long, ready to strike and claim its prey. However, looming over them all is the true titan of these prehistoric waters - a massive Mosasaur stretching an astonishing 55 feet (17 meters) in length. The attention to detail in this artwork allows us to appreciate the diversity and size differences among these magnificent creatures. From the smaller Enchodus with its sharp teeth designed for hunting fish, to Dolichorhynchops - a plesiosaur-like reptile reaching up to 17 feet (5 meters), each predator represents a unique stage on the evolutionary timeline. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing scene, it serves as a reminder of how Earth's oceans have evolved throughout history and how life has adapted and thrived within their depths. This image not only captures our imagination but also offers valuable insights into our planet's rich natural history and highlights the incredible diversity that once inhabited our seas millions of years ago.
