Cylinder sun dial

Engraving of a cylinder sun dial. Also known as a shepherds or pillar dial, this is a latitude-specific design and so is not suitable for travel. A horizontal gnomon is adjusted for the date (set around the top disc of the cylinder) and is pointed in the direction of the sun so that the shadow falls vertically along the cylinder. The time is read from the length of the shadow. This illustration first appeared in the Gentlemans Magazine in 1793

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite engraving of a cylinder sun dial, also known as a shepherds or pillar dial. Dating back to the 18th century, this specific design was created for determining time at a particular latitude and is not suitable for travel. The illustration, which first appeared in the Gentlemans Magazine in 1793, beautifully captures the intricate details of this historical astronomical instrument. The cylinder sun dial features a horizontal gnomon that can be adjusted according to the date by rotating the top disc of the cylinder. Positioned towards the direction of the sun, it casts a shadow vertically along the cylindrical surface. By measuring the length of this shadow, one can accurately tell time. This remarkable piece from history highlights both scientific ingenuity and artistic craftsmanship. Its delicate engravings depict an era when solar-based timekeeping played a crucial role in people's lives. As we gaze upon this monochrome image captured by Todd-White Art Photography, we are transported back to an age where technology relied on celestial movements rather than digital precision. With its rich history and timeless elegance, this engraved cylinder sun dial serves as a reminder of our ancestors' quest for understanding and measuring time through their observations of nature's most reliable source: sunlight.
