Deforestation protest, Hawaii

Wao Kele o Puna deforestation protest in the Wao Kele o Puna rainforest, on the slopes of Kilauea volcano, in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii, USA. This demonstration was organised to protest against the bulldozing of Wao Kele o Puna rainforest for geothermal development. Developers wanted to drill experimental geothermal wells in the rainforest to use as sources of energy. This could solve the state of Hawaiis dependence on oil to generate electricity. Protesters successfully waged a strong campaign to stop any further rainforest destruction in Wao Kele O Puna, the last expanse of lowland tropical rainforest in the USA. The rainforest is now being preserved
