Dutch recapture of New York, 1673

Dutch capture of New York. 17th century artwork of a Dutch fleet under Admiral Cornelis Evertsen the Youngest (1642-1706) recapturing New York from the English on 24 August 1673. The town had been founded as New Amsterdam in 1625 by Dutch settlers, but was captured by the English in 1664. This brief recapture by the Dutch, part of the Third Anglo-Dutch War, ended when the Treaty of Westminster (November 1674) ceded the settlement permanently to England. This engraving, which has Dutch text at top, is a copy of an earlier 1674 Dutch work. This copy is from Justin Winsors 1884 edition of Narrative and Critical History of America

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the Dutch recapture of New York in 1673. The artwork depicts a Dutch fleet led by Admiral Cornelis Evertsen the Youngest, bravely reclaiming New York from English control on 24 August 1673. Originally established as New Amsterdam by Dutch settlers in 1625, the town had fallen into English hands in 1664. This brief recapture marked an important event during the Third Anglo-Dutch War. The engraving, a copy of an earlier Dutch work from 1674, showcases intricate details and monochrome artistry that brings this historical scene to life. With its text written in Dutch at the top, it serves as a testament to both artistic skill and storytelling. Justin Winsor's edition of Narrative and Critical History of America (1884) preserves this remarkable image for future generations to appreciate. It reminds us of the complex tapestry that is American history - one filled with conquests, settlements, and shifting alliances. While ultimately short-lived due to the Treaty of Westminster in November 1674 which permanently ceded New York back to England, this momentary triumph for the Dutch remains etched within our collective memory. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back to a time when naval power played a pivotal role in shaping North American colonies and their destinies.
