Earths atmosphere and radiation, artwork
Earths atmosphere and radiation. Computer artwork showing the differing absorbance of electromagnetic waves by the Earths atmosphere. Low frequency microwaves and radio waves (4th and 5th from right), and mid-frequency visible light (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th from left) are able to reach the Earths surface, although long-wave radio (1st, 2nd and 3rd from right) is blocked. The majority of infrared radiation (6th, 7th, 8th and 9th from right) is absorbed by water in the Earths atmosphere, although some does reach the surface. High frequency wavelengths including X-rays and gamma rays (1st, 2nd and 3rd from left) are absorbed by the Earths atmosphere and so do not reach Earths surface

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Earth's Atmosphere and Radiation" beautifully illustrates the complex interaction between electromagnetic waves and our planet. In this computer-generated image, we witness the varying absorbance of different wavelengths by Earth's atmosphere. The visual representation showcases a range of electromagnetic waves, each with its own distinct behavior. Low-frequency microwaves and radio waves can be seen reaching Earth's surface from the right side of the image, while mid-frequency visible light illuminates the scene from the left. However, long-wave radio is blocked before it can penetrate through. Interestingly, most infrared radiation emitted by objects on Earth is absorbed by water in our atmosphere. Nevertheless, some manages to break through and reach the planet's surface as depicted here. On the far left side of this stunning composition lies an array of high-frequency wavelengths including X-rays and gamma rays. These energetic forms of radiation are unable to make their way through Earth's protective shield – its atmosphere – thus safeguarding life on our planet from their potentially harmful effects. Through this thought-provoking artwork created by Science Photo Library, we gain a deeper appreciation for how Earth interacts with various types of radiation across different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. It serves as a reminder that our atmosphere acts as both a protector and filter against these powerful forces originating from space.
