Eastern grey kangaroo joey

Eastern grey kangaroo joey (Macropus giganteus) suckling. As a marsupial, a female kangaroo gives birth to an under-developed young (joey) that develops in the mothers pouch. The joey feeds on its mothers milk for around 300 days and will often return for protection or milk after leaving the pouch. An adult feeds mainly on vegetation. The large hind legs allow a kangaroo to move with great speed in a bounding motion. It is mostly nocturnal, but is also active at dusk and dawn. Photographed at Narawntapu National Park, in Tasmania, Australia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the tender moment of an Eastern grey kangaroo joey suckling from its mother. The Eastern grey kangaroo, scientifically known as Macropus giganteus, is a marsupial species found in Australia. As a marsupial, the female kangaroo gives birth to an under-developed young called a joey that continues to grow and develop inside her pouch. For approximately 300 days, the adorable joey relies on its mother's milk for nourishment. Even after leaving the safety of the pouch, it often returns for protection or to seek additional sustenance. While adults primarily feed on vegetation, this little one depends solely on its mother's milk. The distinctive large hind legs of a kangaroo enable them to move with remarkable speed through their characteristic bounding motion. Although mostly active during nighttime hours, they can also be spotted at dawn and dusk. This heartwarming image was captured at Narawntapu National Park in Tasmania, Australia – home to diverse wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. It showcases not only the intricate details of these incredible creatures but also highlights their unique behaviors and natural habitat. Science Photo Library has beautifully preserved this snapshot of nature's wonders – showcasing the beauty and complexity of Australian fauna while reminding us of the delicate bond between mothers and their offspring in the animal kingdom.
