Edward Jenner (1749-1823)

Edward Jenner (1749-1823), British physician. Jenner, who also did work as a naturalist, is famed for developing a vaccine for the often fatal viral infection smallpox. He investigated folk tales about the immunity of cowpox victims to smallpox. In 1796 he used a thorn to inoculate a healthy boy with fluid from a cowpox blister on a dairy maids finger. Six weeks later he inoculated the boy with smallpox, and the boy did not develop the disease. The immunising process was named vaccination after the cowpox virus (vaccinia), and was made compulsory in Britain in 1853

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned British physician and naturalist, Edward Jenner (1749-1823). Known for his groundbreaking work in medicine, Jenner is celebrated for developing a vaccine that effectively combated smallpox, a highly fatal viral infection. His revolutionary discovery stemmed from his investigation of folklore surrounding cowpox victims' immunity to smallpox. In 1796, using a thorn as an inoculation tool, Jenner administered fluid from a cowpox blister on a dairy maid's finger to a healthy young boy. Astonishingly, six weeks later when the boy was exposed to smallpox, he did not develop the disease. This pioneering immunizing process was named vaccination after the cowpox virus known as vaccinia. Edward Jenner's contributions to medical science were so significant that vaccination against smallpox became compulsory in Britain by 1853. Beyond his role as a physician and researcher, Jenner also had an affinity for nature and ornithology. Sheila Terry's masterful portrait captures both the historical significance of Edward Jenner's achievements and his multifaceted persona. This image serves as a powerful reminder of how one individual's dedication can revolutionize preventative medicine and shape the course of history in disease prevention.
