EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a set of four engraved emblems from the renowned work "Philosophia reformata" by Johann Daniel Mylius. In this intricate artwork, we are transported to a mystical realm where symbolism intertwines with alchemical wisdom. At the top left corner, a woman adorned with the five planets as stars encircles her head, gracefully strolling across a serene lake. Accompanying her are the celestial beings of the Sun and Moon, illuminating her path. Moving to the top right, we delve into an enigmatic cave where gods representing each of the seven planets reside. The Moon, Sun, and Venus take center stage in the foreground while Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, and Mercury stand proudly on mounds behind them. Shifting our gaze to lower left reveals a man and woman supporting an Earth globe within a triangle. This emblem symbolizes their profound connection to nature and their role in its preservation. Finally, at lower right stands a winged old man finding solace by warming himself near a fire. Playful children embodying both the Moon and Sun frolic at his feet—a testament to eternal cycles of life. These meticulously crafted emblems serve as beacons for aspiring alchemists seeking enlightenment through their art—the elusive Philosophers Stone. Todd-White Art Photography masterfully captures this 17th-century engraving's monochrome beauty that transports us back in time to explore German history intertwined with alchemical mysticism.
