Emperor scorpion C013 / 4402

Emperor scorpion (Pandinus imperator). This is the largest of the scorpions, reaching a length of over 20 centimetres. It inhabits forests and savannah in tropical central Africa. Its tail is tipped with a ball-like segment called the telson, which contains venom glands linked to a sharp sting. This scorpions sting is not fatal to humans, having an effect like that of a bee sting. The emperor scorpion feeds on insects, arachnids, small mammals and reptiles. Prey is held in the pincers, stung with the tail, and then eaten. Photographed in Africa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Emperor scorpion (Pandinus imperator), known as the largest of its kind, measuring over 20 centimeters in length. Native to the lush forests and savannahs of tropical central Africa, this formidable creature possesses a tail adorned with a ball-like segment called the telson. Within this appendage lie venom glands connected to a sharp sting, though it poses no fatal threat to humans, merely causing an effect similar to that of a bee sting. The Emperor scorpion's diet consists of insects, arachnids, small mammals, and reptiles. It captures its prey by grasping them with its powerful pincers before delivering a paralyzing sting from its tail. Once subdued, the scorpion proceeds to devour its meal with great efficiency. Photographed against an African backdrop, this image beautifully captures the essence of this fascinating arthropod. Its large size and distinctive features make it an impressive predator within its ecosystem. From its menacing pincers and deadly sting to its intricate mouthparts and robust legs, every detail highlights the incredible biology behind this species. With stunning clarity and precision captured by Pascal Goetgheluck for Science Photo Library, viewers are transported into the world of these enigmatic creatures found in Africa's tropical regions. This photograph serves as both a testament to nature's diversity and an opportunity for us to appreciate their remarkable beauty up close.
