EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the bust of Epicurus, a renowned Greek philosopher who lived from 341 to 270 BC. Known for his groundbreaking ideas on matter and philosophy, Epicurus extended the concept proposed by Democritus that matter is composed of atoms with varying sizes and shapes. Establishing a successful school of thought in Athens in 305 BC, Epicurus left an indelible mark on ancient Greece. Despite having written over 300 scholarly volumes covering diverse subjects, only fragments of his work have survived through time. Nevertheless, his followers firmly believed that pleasure, defined as freedom from pain and anxiety, was the ultimate goal in life. Even after his passing, the philosophy of Epicureanism continued to attract devotees until the 3rd century AD. Today, the term "Epicurean" has taken on new meaning as it refers to individuals dedicated to indulging in sensual pleasures. This remarkable photograph was captured within Vatican Museum's collection and serves as a powerful reminder of this influential figure's legacy.
