Excavations at Sima de los Huesos, Spain C018 / 5409

Excavations at Sima de los Huesos. Archaeologists working at the Sima de los Huesos site, Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain. Mitochondrial DNA from a Homo heidelbergensis femur (thigh) bone (femur 13) found at the site has been extracted and sequenced. The fossil is over 400, 000 years old, making it the oldest human DNA sequence published to date (December 2013). It showed that H. heidelbergensis was more closely related to the Denisovans, an eastern Eurasian hominin, than to Neanderthals. The work was carried out in a collaboration between Centro Mixto de Evolucion y Comportamiento Humanos, Madrid, Spain, directed by Prof. Juan Luis Arsuaga and Svante Paabos department of genetics, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable excavations taking place at Sima de los Huesos in Spain. Archaeologists can be seen diligently working at the site, located in Sierra de Atapuerca, as they uncover ancient remnants of our human ancestors. One particularly significant find is showcased here - a Homo heidelbergensis femur bone (femur 13) that has yielded mitochondrial DNA. Dating back over 400,000 years, this fossil holds the distinction of being the oldest human DNA sequence ever published (as of December 2013). The groundbreaking analysis revealed an unexpected connection between H. heidelbergensis and the Denisovans, an eastern Eurasian hominin group, rather than their more commonly associated relatives, Neanderthals. The collaborative effort behind this groundbreaking research involved scientists from Centro Mixto de Evolucion y Comportamiento Humanos in Madrid and Svante Paabo's department of genetics at Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. Their combined expertise allowed for the successful extraction and sequencing of mitochondrial DNA from this incredibly preserved sample. As these dedicated archaeologists continue to dig deeper into Sima de los Huesos' pit of bones, each discovery brings us closer to unraveling humanity's prehistoric origins. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of our shared past and highlights how scientific collaboration can unlock secrets hidden within fossilized remains.
