Eye retina F008 / 0713

The retina, inside the eye, contains a light-sensitive membranous layer of cells. These are specialized nerve cells: elongated rods (flower like shapes) and cone-tipped cells, that produce vision. The yellow structure at bottom represents the epithelium. The rods are very sensitive and respond to dim light. With them the eye can detect images. While the cones are less sensitive but responsible for colour vision. Rods and cones pass visual signals through the optic nerve to the brain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Eye Retina F008 / 0713" showcases the intricate beauty and complexity of the human eye. The image reveals the inner workings of the retina, a remarkable light-sensitive layer that plays a crucial role in our ability to see. The retina is comprised of specialized nerve cells known as rods and cones, which are elegantly depicted in this stylized illustration. The elongated rod-shaped cells resemble delicate flowers, while cone-tipped cells add vibrant pops of color to the composition. Together, these photoreceptor cells enable us to perceive images and experience vision. In this artwork, set against a striking black background, we can also observe the yellow structure at the bottom representing the epithelium. This visual representation emphasizes how rods excel at detecting dim light, allowing us to navigate in low-light conditions. On the other hand, cones are responsible for our perception of colors but are less sensitive to light. As visual signals pass through these remarkable photoreceptors within our retina, they travel along the optic nerve towards our brain where they are interpreted into meaningful images and experiences. This mesmerizing print not only celebrates human anatomy but also serves as a reminder of how intricately designed our senses truly are. It invites us to marvel at both nature's artistry and science's understanding of it.
