Faradays gold colloid, 1857
Gold colloid. A sample flask containing a sample of a gold colloid made by Michael Faraday in 1857. A gold colloid is a suspension of microscopic particles of metallic gold in water. He used phosphorus to reduce a solution of gold chloride, as the metal precipitates out it forms particles of the order 100 nanometres in diameter. The colour of the colloid is determined by the particle size. This sample is on display at the Royal Institution, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Faraday's gold colloid, a remarkable scientific achievement from 1857. The image features a sample flask containing the gold colloid, meticulously created by the renowned scientist Michael Faraday himself. A gold colloid is essentially a suspension of minuscule particles of metallic gold in water. In this case, Faraday employed phosphorus to reduce a solution of gold chloride, resulting in the precipitation of tiny particles measuring around 100 nanometres in diameter. The striking aspect of this exhibit lies not only in its historical significance but also in its visual appeal. The coloration of the colloid is determined by the size of these particles, creating an intriguing optical effect that adds to its allure. Against a pristine white background and expertly captured by Science Photo Library's studio shot, this artifact stands as an emblematic representation of 19th-century chemistry. Now housed at London's prestigious Royal Institution, this piece serves as a testament to Faraday's groundbreaking contributions to science and his pioneering work with colloidal suspensions. As viewers gaze upon this extraordinary specimen within the museum walls, they are transported back in time to witness firsthand one of history's most significant scientific advancements – an awe-inspiring fusion between artistry and chemistry that continues to captivate audiences even today.
