Forget-me-not flower, SEM
Forget-me-not flower. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a forget-me- not (Myosotis arvensis) flower. Sepals (green, hairy) and petals (blue) surround the male and female reproductive structures of the flower. The stamens (yellow) produce male gametes in the form of pollen grains, which are released from the anthers at each stamens tip. During pollination, pollen grains land on the stigma (green, upper centre), which is connected to the ovary (not seen) in the base of the flower by a stalk-like style (centre). The stigma, style and ovary are known collectively as the carpel. Magnification: x29 when printed 10cm high
