Fossil of Archaeopterix, one of the first birds
Archaeopteryx. Computer enhanced image of a fossilised skeleton of Archaeopteryx, a reptile- like bird which is the ancestor of modern birds. Archaeopteryx lived about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period and was about the size of a large crow. This bird had many reptilian features, having probably evolved from small therapod dinosaurs. Unlike modern birds, Archae- opteryx had teeth, clawed hands, a bony tail and lacked air pockets in its bones. Its breast bone (sternum) also lacks the carinate " keel" to which modern birds anchor their powerful flight muscles. Archaeopteryxs feathers were asymmetrical like a modern bird s, but it was probably a weak flyer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the fossil of Archaeopteryx, one of the first birds to have ever existed. The computer-enhanced image reveals a remarkable skeleton that provides valuable insights into the evolutionary history of modern birds. Dating back approximately 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period, this reptile-like bird was roughly the size of a large crow. Archaeopteryx possessed several reptilian characteristics, suggesting its evolution from small therapod dinosaurs. Unlike its contemporary counterparts, this ancient avian had teeth and clawed hands while lacking air pockets in its bones. Notably, it lacked the carinate "keel" on its breastbone that anchors flight muscles in modern birds. The most striking feature captured by this photograph is undoubtedly Archaeopteryx's feathers. Asymmetrical like those found in today's birds, these feathers indicate some level of flight capability; however, it is believed that Archaeopteryx was a weak flyer compared to present-day species. As we delve deeper into paleontology and uncover more about our planet's past inhabitants, fossils like this provide invaluable evidence for understanding how life has evolved over millions of years. This awe-inspiring image serves as a testament to both the beauty and complexity of nature's intricate tapestry and reminds us of our connection to these ancient creatures who once roamed our Earth.
