EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Francis Xavier, a renowned Spanish missionary and saint. Born into an aristocratic family in Xavier, within the Kingdom of Navarre, he embarked on a journey that would shape his destiny. After studying in Paris in 1525, Xavier dedicated himself to Catholicism and played a pivotal role in establishing the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) with five other individuals in 1534. The image captures Xavier's devout nature as he is depicted praying fervently. His mission took him far and wide across Asia, including Portuguese India, Portuguese Malacca (present-day Indonesia), and Japan. Despite his tireless efforts to reach China, he tragically succumbed to fever before fulfilling this ambition. Throughout his travels, Xavier converted thousands of people to Christianity and left an indelible mark on history. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, he was canonized as a saint in 1622. The artwork from Historia da vida do padre Francisco de Xavier (1600) exudes medieval charm with its monochrome aesthetic. The divine light shining upon Xavier's head symbolizes the heavenly guidance that illuminated his path as a missionary. This remarkable portrait not only pays homage to Francis Xavier but also serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Jesuit mission during the Middle Ages.
