Giffards airship. 19th-century artwork of the airship invented by French engineer and aeronaut Henri Giffard (1825-1882). Giffard developed his airship in 1852. It was the first passenger-carrying and steerable airship, also called a dirigible. It was 43 metres long and flew at about 5 kilometres per hour. The canopy was filled with hydrogen, and the propeller was driven with a steam engine that had a funnel that pointed downwards. Giffard flew his airship from Paris to Trappes on 24 September 1852, covering a distance of 27 kilometres
