Greater flamingo

Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus). This flamingo is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, southern Europe and southern Asia. It can reach a height of 140cm. Flamingos filter-feed using their turned beaks to remove any unwanted silt. They range in colour from white to bright pink depending on their intake of carotene found in food such as shrimps and algae. The colouring has a considerable impact on the flamingos chances of mating as colourful individuals make more desirable mating partners. Flamingos lay one egg at at a time in nests moulded from mud. Photographed in Namibia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the elegant beauty of a Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) in all its glory. With its slender neck gracefully arched, this magnificent bird stands tall at an impressive height of 140cm. Found across sub-Saharan Africa, southern Europe, and southern Asia, these flamboyant creatures are truly a sight to behold. Flamingos are renowned for their unique feeding technique - filter-feeding. Using their distinctively curved beaks, they skillfully sift through water to remove unwanted silt and extract their preferred diet of shrimps and algae. Interestingly, the intensity of carotene intake from these food sources determines the vibrant coloring displayed by each individual flamingo. Ranging from pure white to vivid pink hues, this striking coloration plays a significant role in attracting potential mates during breeding season. In Namibia's picturesque landscape, where this photograph was taken, one can observe the intricate nests crafted by these birds using mud as building material. Flamingos lay just one egg at a time within these carefully molded nests. The image perfectly captures the essence of ornithology and biology intertwined with African wildlife. It serves as a reminder that nature's palette is filled with awe-inspiring wonders like the Greater flamingo – an embodiment of grace and resilience in our natural world.
