Higgs boson discovery announcement C013 / 6875

Higgs boson discovery announcement, 4th July 2012. Joe Incandela, spokesperson for the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment, speaking at a seminar to announce the observation of a new particle consistent with the Higgs boson. Data collected by the CMS and ATLAS (a torodial LHC apparatus) experiments at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) have shown the new particle at around 125 giga electron volts (GeV). Further analysis will determine if the particle is the long sought for Higgs boson, a fundamental particle that is thought to give other particles mass. The particle is required by many of the Grand Unified Theories (or GUTs) which hope to explain three of the fundamental forces (electromagnetism and the weak and the strong nuclear forces) in a single unified theory

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in the field of particle physics - the announcement of the Higgs boson discovery on July 4th, 2012. Joe Incandela, spokesperson for the CMS experiment at CERN, stands before a mesmerized audience during a seminar held in Switzerland to unveil this groundbreaking observation. The image showcases the excitement and anticipation surrounding this significant scientific achievement. With data collected by both CMS and ATLAS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), scientists have detected a new particle weighing approximately 125 GeV, which aligns with predictions for the elusive Higgs boson. Further analysis will determine if this is indeed the long-sought-after "God particle" responsible for endowing other particles with mass. The photograph not only highlights human ingenuity and dedication but also emphasizes international collaboration as researchers from across Europe come together to unravel nature's secrets. It symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe's fundamental structure. In an era defined by technological advancements and unprecedented scientific discoveries, this image serves as a testament to mankind's ability to push boundaries and unlock profound insights into subatomic particles. The Standard Model of particle physics may soon be further illuminated thanks to these remarkable findings made possible by cutting-edge detectors like CMS. CERN/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY has immortalized this pivotal moment through their lens, forever preserving it as an emblematic representation of progress in our understanding of matter itself.
