Final stage of the Luna 1 Soviet rocket

Final stage of the Luna 1 Soviet rocket, exhibition model. Launched on 2 January 1959, this rocket (a R-7 Semyorka) took Luna 1 into orbit. The Luna 1 spacecraft emerged from this final stage, and then used its own propulsion systems to travel to and pass close by the Moon, the first spacecraft in history to achieve this. After passing the Moon, its trajectory turned it into a satellite of the Sun, the first spacecraft to enter an independent orbit of the Sun. This life-size model was photographed in 1966 as part of an exhibition at the All-Russia Exposition Centre, Moscow, Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the final stage of the Luna 1 Soviet rocket, an iconic piece of history that marked a significant milestone in space exploration. Launched on January 2,1959, this R-7 Semyorka rocket propelled Luna 1 into orbit and paved the way for groundbreaking achievements. The Luna 1 spacecraft emerged from this very stage and utilized its own propulsion systems to embark on an extraordinary journey towards the Moon. In a remarkable feat, Luna 1 became the first-ever spacecraft to approach and pass by our celestial neighbor, forever etching its name in the annals of space travel. But it didn't stop there; after surpassing the Moon's vicinity, its trajectory transformed it into a satellite of the Sun – another historic first as a spacecraft entered an independent orbit around our star. Captured in this life-size model photographed at Moscow's All-Russia Exposition Centre in 1966, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and technological advancement during one of history's most exciting eras: the Space Race. This exhibit stands as a testament to Russia's pioneering spirit and their contributions to space exploration throughout the mid-20th century. As we gaze upon this impressive display housed within this historical museum setting, we can't help but marvel at how far we have come since those early days when dreams took flight amidst flaring rockets and cutting-edge equipment. It serves as a reminder that every step forward brings us closer to unlocking new frontiers beyond
