Sketch from Tsiolkovskys notebook
Sketch from Tsiolkovskys notebook. Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935) was a Soviet rocket pioneer. Although he never built a rocket, Tsiolkovskys work and notes such as these were highly influential in the development of Soviet rocket and space technology. He became deaf after contracting scarlet fever at around the age of 10 and from then on he schooled himself, mainly from books in his fathers library. He determined that the Earths escape velocity was 8 kilometres per second and showed that this could be achieved using liquid-fuel rockets. Photographed in 1980, at the Tsiolkovsky memorial museum, in Kaluga, Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a sketch from the notebook of Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky, a renowned Soviet rocket pioneer. Despite never actually constructing a rocket himself, Tsiolkovsky's groundbreaking work and meticulous notes like this one played an instrumental role in shaping the development of Soviet rocket and space technology. Tsiolkovsky's journey towards becoming a pioneer in his field was not without challenges. At the tender age of 10, he lost his hearing due to scarlet fever. Undeterred by this setback, he embarked on a self-guided education, devouring books from his father's library. Through his studies, Tsiolkovsky calculated that Earth's escape velocity amounted to 8 kilometers per second and proposed that liquid-fuel rockets could achieve such speeds. Photographed at the Tsiolkovsky memorial museum in Kaluga, Russia in 1980, this image transports us back to an era where hand-drawn illustrations held immense value for scientific exploration. The monochromatic artwork captures the essence of Tsiolkovsky's innovative mind as he delved into experiments and engineering marvels. As we gaze upon this historical artifact with admiration, it serves as a reminder of how individuals like Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky paved the way for future advancements in space flight and rocketry. His contributions continue to shape our understanding of space exploration even today - truly making him an indelible figure within European history and beyond.
