Horse chestnut pollen, SEM

Horse chestnut pollen grain. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pollen grain from a flowering horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum). The grain has three lobes, separated through deep furrows through which the pollen tube emerges at the time of germination. The characteristic surface of pollen grains is used by botanists to recognise and classify plants. Each pollen grain contains a male gamete (reproductive cell) that is intended to fertilise an egg or ovule (female gamete), and initiate the formation of a seed for a new plant. Magnification: x1500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of horse chestnut pollen, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The false-colored image reveals a single pollen grain from a flowering horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum), displaying its distinct three-lobed structure. Deep furrows separate these lobes, which serve as channels for the emergence of the pollen tube during germination. Botanists rely on the unique surface characteristics of pollen grains to identify and classify different plant species. Each grain contains a male gamete, or reproductive cell, responsible for fertilizing an egg or ovule – the female gamete – initiating seed formation and giving rise to new plants. Magnified at 1500 times its actual size and printed at 10 centimeters wide, this SEM image offers us an extraordinary glimpse into the microscopic world of botanical reproduction. The sculpted appearance and vibrant colors add depth to our understanding of this biological process. Beyond its scientific significance, this photograph is also visually striking. It captures nature's artistry in minute detail: the tri-lobed shape, exquisitely textured outer wall (exine), and overall dispersal potential embodied by these tiny grains. This mesmerizing print serves as a testament to both the complexity and elegance found within even the smallest components of our natural world.
