Hyperbaric oxygenation cchamber, Russia

Oxygen therapy. A patient about to be loaded into a small chamber used in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). In this kind of hard chamber the pressure may be raised to up to 6 bar (600 kilopascal). The atmosphere is 21% oxygen, although patients in the chamber can breathe 100% oxygen through a mask. HBOT was originally used for decompression sickness in divers, but it has been found useful in carbon monoxide poisoning, in the treatment of gas gangrene and may be of some use in cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Photographed at the Sechenov Medical Institute, Moscow, in 1987

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in medical history - the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in Russia. The image showcases a patient about to enter a small chamber specifically designed for this groundbreaking treatment. In HBOT, the pressure inside the hard chamber can be increased up to an astonishing 6 bar (600 kilopascal), while maintaining an atmosphere with 21% oxygen. Originally developed for divers suffering from decompression sickness, HBOT has proven its effectiveness in various other conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning and gas gangrene. Moreover, it holds potential benefits for patients with cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Taken at the renowned Sechenov Medical Institute in Moscow during 1987, this photograph highlights the dedication of Russian medical professionals towards advancing therapeutic techniques. The room is filled with an air of anticipation as doctors and nurses carefully control every aspect of this innovative treatment process. The image's monochrome composition adds depth to its historical significance, transporting us back to a time when scientific exploration was at its peak. It serves as a reminder that even amidst political tensions within the Soviet Union, advancements in medicine continued unabated. This print from Science Photo Library encapsulates not only the progress made by Russian scientists but also represents a milestone in global healthcare practices. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and our unwavering commitment to improving lives through cutting-edge therapies like hyperbaric oxygenation.
