Illuminated fountains display. 19th-century artwork of a man operating one of the illuminated fountain displays installed for the Universal Exposition (World Fair) of 1889 in Paris, France. The technique of illuminating water fountains was developed by the Swiss physicist Daniel Colladon (1802-1893). The principle involved light being trapped in the water by total internal reflection. These levers, in an observation kiosk connected to more extensive underground machinery, were used to change the colours of the fountains.
