Insulin crystals, light micrograph C017 / 8246

Insulin. Polarised light micrograph (PLM) of crystals of the hormone insulin. The insulin molecule is made up of two chains of amino acids (A & B chains), which are held together by two sulphur bonds. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas by cells of the islets of Langerhans. Its function is to regulate blood sugar levels. Insufficient production of insulin leads to an accumulation of glucose in the blood, causing the condition diabetes mellitus. Low magnification micrograph with polarised light. Horizontal object size 3 mm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of insulin crystals, as captured under polarised light. The image reveals the molecular structure of insulin, a vital hormone produced in the pancreas by cells known as islets of Langerhans. Insulin plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels within our bodies. Composed of two chains of amino acids (A & B chains), held together by sulphur bonds, insulin acts as a key that unlocks cells to allow glucose to enter and be utilized for energy production. However, when there is insufficient insulin production, such as in individuals with diabetes mellitus, glucose accumulates in the bloodstream leading to potentially serious health complications. The low magnification micrograph emphasizes the three-dimensional nature of these crystal formations. Each crystal represents an extraordinary feat of biochemistry and serves as a reminder of the complexity inherent within our own bodies. Beyond its scientific significance, this image also possesses an artistic quality that captivates viewers. The vibrant colors and delicate patterns formed by these insulin crystals evoke awe and wonder at the intricacies found within even the smallest components of life. This photograph stands testament to both the power and beauty that can be found at microscopic scales – reminding us once again that science not only holds answers but also inspires curiosity and appreciation for our world's wonders.
