Jerome de Lalande (1732-1807), French astronomer. Joseph Jerome Le Francois de Lalande trained as a lawyer, but also took a keen interest in astronomy. In 1751 he was sent to Berlin to make observations of the Moon, helping to determine its parallax. The French text here names Lalande and mentions his membership of the royal societies and academies of Paris, London, Berlin and St Petersburg, and states he was born at Bourg-en-Bresse, France, on 11 July 1732. The verse is from French poet Jean Dorat (1508-1588). The etcher and artist of this 1773 artwork are named as Christian Friedrich Fritzsch and Andre Pujos
