EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of John D. Rockefeller, an iconic figure in American history. Taken in 1913 by the Library of Congress, it portrays a distinguished elderly man with a remarkable story to tell. John Davison Rockefeller was not only a prominent US oil magnate but also an extraordinary philanthropist. His journey began in 1862 when he partnered with Samuel Andrews, the ingenious inventor behind a cost-effective oil refining process. Their business thrived, leading them to establish the renowned Standard Oil Company alongside his brother William in 1870. This venture propelled them to dominate the entire oil industry. Despite facing legal challenges as their company was declared an illegal monopoly in 1892 (ultimately dissolved seven years later), Rockefeller's fortune reached unprecedented heights - approximately one billion US dollars at its peak! However, what truly sets him apart is his unparalleled generosity towards charitable institutions. He donated around 550 million dollars to various causes, including the establishment of the esteemed Rockefeller Foundation in 1913. In this portrait from over a century ago, we witness John D. Rockefeller seated on his bicycle - symbolizing both progress and mobility during that era. The image exudes wealth and power while capturing an important moment within America's industrial revolution. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece today, let us remember John D. Rockefeller not just as an influential industrialist but also as a compassionate humanitarian who left an indelible mark on society through his immense philanthropy and groundbreaking contributions to technology and transportation.
