This print showcases John Flamsteed, an influential English astronomer from the 17th century. Appointed as the first Astronomer Royal by Charles II in 1675, Flamsteed dedicated his life to constructing accurate lunar and stellar tables essential for determining longitude at sea. To fulfill this task, he oversaw the creation of the renowned Royal Greenwich Observatory. Flamsteed's meticulous work resulted in a comprehensive star catalogue containing nearly 3000 positions with an impressive accuracy of 10 seconds of arc. However, it was not published until six years after his passing, making it a testament to his dedication and commitment to advancing astronomical knowledge. In this colored illustration capturing Flamsteed's likeness, we see a distinguished man dressed in traditional attire befitting his era. His gown and wig symbolize both the formality of scientific pursuits during that time and Flamsteed's position as a respected scientist and researcher. As one gazes upon this portrait, they are transported back to England's rich history where groundbreaking discoveries were made amidst maritime exploration. John Flamsteed remains forever etched in history as an instrumental figure who contributed significantly to astronomy and navigation.
