Leaf veins of the common ivy
Scanning electron micrograph, tinted green, of a leaf skeleton of the common ivy, Hedera helix. The skeleton is left after the soft tissue (mesophyll) has rotted away, & consists of the vascular tissue (veins) of the plant: the xylem, which carries water & minerals from the roots, & the phloem, which takes sugar from the leaves to the rest of the plant. The xylem cells are impregnated with lignin, a polymer resistant to decay & hence surv- iving to form the skeleton. In dicotyledonous plants (with two seed- leaves) the vascular system is a network of increasingly small veins, as here. Magnification: X 4 (35mm). Original is BW print B745/032

Dicotyledon Hedera Helix Mesophyll Vascular Tissue Common Ivy Vein
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of leaf veins in the common ivy. In this scanning electron micrograph, tinted green, we are presented with a mesmerizing view of a leaf skeleton from Hedera helix. The delicate framework remains after the soft tissue, known as mesophyll, has decomposed. What remains is the vascular tissue or veins of the plant: xylem and phloem. The xylem plays a crucial role in transporting water and minerals from the roots to other parts of the plant, while phloem carries sugar from leaves to nourish different areas. To ensure its survival and longevity, xylem cells are impregnated with lignin—a durable polymer that resists decay—forming this remarkable skeleton. In dicotyledonous plants like this one (with two seed-leaves), we witness an intricate network of increasingly smaller veins throughout their vascular system. This photograph provides us with a magnified view at 4 times its original size (35mm), allowing us to appreciate every minute detail. Through this image captured by Science Photo Library's talented photographers, we gain insight into nature's incredible design and complexity within botany. It serves as a reminder that even in decay lies astonishing beauty waiting to be discovered.
