Linear script symbols
Linear script symbols arranged in groups of two or more. Whilst excavating Knossos, the British archaeologist Arthur Evans (1851-1941) found three forms of writing which he defined as Minoan: Hieroglyphic (pictograms), Linear A and Linear B. Complex words of three or more symbols appear in both Linear A and Linear B. With pictograms, a sign stood for each word, requiring as many signs as there were words. The development of signs to represent syllables overcame this problem and represented a major advance. Table from The Story of the Alphabet (Edward Clodd, 1900)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of linear script symbols, arranged in groups of two or more. Unearthed during the excavation of Knossos by renowned British archaeologist Arthur Evans, these ancient writings are classified into three forms: Hieroglyphic (pictograms), Linear A, and Linear B. While pictograms required a separate sign for each word, the development of signs representing syllables marked a significant advancement in communication. The table depicted in this image is taken from "The Story of the Alphabet" by Edward Clodd, published in 1900. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the history and evolution of writing systems. The inclusion of hieroglyphics, antiquity, artistry, and linguistic elements adds depth to this visual representation. Arthur Evans' groundbreaking discoveries shed light on Minoan civilization and their use of various scripts. Both Linear A and Linear B feature complex words composed of three or more symbols. This photograph captures not only an artistic illustration but also serves as a historical artifact that unravels mysteries surrounding ancient languages. With its rich symbolism and historical significance, this image transports us back to an era where written language was still being shaped and refined. It reminds us that every stroke carries meaning—a testament to humanity's unending quest for knowledge through communication across time and cultures.
