LM of the marine dinoflagellate, Ceratium sp

Dinoflagellate. Light micrograph of the marine dinoflagellate Ceratium. Found in both freshwater and saltwater, dinoflagellates are single-celled protozoa that float in the water column as plankton. Ceratium is characterized by its elongated hollow horns (long thin). These assist with floatation. Dinoflagellates usually have two flagellae (not visible) and thus are also capable of self-propulsion. The colouring and poisoning of sea water in " Red tides" is due to some species of dinoflagellates. Differential interference contrast technique. Magnification: x184 at 5x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a marine dinoflagellate known as Ceratium sp. Captured using a light micrograph, this single-celled protozoa is found in both freshwater and saltwater environments, gracefully floating in the water column as plankton. One striking feature of Ceratium is its elongated hollow horns, which aid in its buoyancy and floatation. Dinoflagellates like Ceratium typically possess two flagellae that are not visible in this image but enable them to propel themselves through the water. These fascinating organisms play a crucial role in our ecosystems; however, some species can cause "Red tides" resulting in the coloring and poisoning of seawater. The differential interference contrast technique employed to capture this photograph enhances the details and textures of Ceratium's structure. With a magnification of x184 at 5x7cm size, every minute aspect becomes visible to our eyes. As we delve into nature's wonders, it becomes evident that even seemingly microscopic creatures hold immense significance within our world. This print serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity present within our oceans and highlights the delicate balance maintained by these mesmerizing dinoflagellates.
