Mars Express and Beagle 2, artwork
Mars Express and Beagle 2. Mars Express (left) is a European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft launched in June 2003. Here, the spacecraft with solar panels deployed has arrived at Mars and, just prior to entering orbit, has deployed the Beagle 2 lander (upper right) on 19 December 2003. Beagle 2 was a British probe designed to land on the surface of Mars. However, the landing failed and contact was lost. Mars Express is the ESAs first Mars mission. Its sensors have extensively mapped Mars, transmitting images and data back to Earth using the spacecrafts dish antenna. The mission has since been extended to at least 2014

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the historic moment when Mars Express, a remarkable spacecraft launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) in June 2003, arrived at its destination. As depicted in this illustration, the spacecraft can be seen with its solar panels fully deployed as it approaches Mars. Just before entering orbit around the red planet on December 19th of that year, Mars Express successfully released Beagle 2, a British probe designed to land on the Martian surface. However, despite high hopes for Beagle 2's mission to explore and analyze Mars' secrets firsthand, contact was tragically lost upon landing. Nevertheless, this event marked an important milestone for ESA as their first-ever dedicated mission to our neighboring planet. Mars Express has since continued its groundbreaking journey throughout the inner solar system and has become an invaluable asset in planetary research. Equipped with advanced sensors and a powerful dish antenna, it has extensively mapped Mars while transmitting breathtaking images and crucial data back to Earth. Originally scheduled until 2014 but subsequently extended further into the future, this ongoing mission represents humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our celestial surroundings. The combination of technological prowess exhibited by both ESA's Mars Express and Beagle 2 serves as a testament to mankind's unwavering determination to unravel the mysteries of our universe.
