Martin Lichtenstein (1780-1857) 1869 engraving of the German physician, zoologist and explorer Martin Hinrich Carl Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein described and named many new species and was responsible for the creation of Berlins Zoological Gardens in 1841, when he persuaded King Frederick William IV of Prussia to donate the grounds of his pheasantry.
