Mediaeval hospital ruins, Scotland
Mediaeval hospital ruins. Remains of what is thought to have been the largest hospital in mediaeval Scotland. Known as Soutra Aisle, this was originally part of the church at the House of the Holy Trinity, a large medieval hospital that was run by Augustinian monks from the 12th to 17th Century. This structure went on to become the burial vault (aisle) of a local family, and is all that remains of the hospital now. Photographed at 1200 feet, at the top of the Lammermuir Hills, near Lauder, Scotland, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting beauty of the mediaeval hospital ruins in Scotland. Once standing as the largest hospital in mediaeval Scotland, these remnants are known as Soutra Aisle and were originally part of the church at the House of the Holy Trinity. This grand medieval hospital was operated by Augustinian monks from the 12th to 17th Century, providing care and solace to those in need. Perched atop the Lammermuir Hills, near Lauder, Scotland, this photograph was taken at an impressive altitude of 1200 feet. The rugged countryside serves as a dramatic backdrop for this classical and ancient structure that holds deep historical significance. As one gazes upon these weathered stones, they bear witness to centuries gone by and evoke a sense of awe for their endurance throughout time. Though now reduced to a burial vault (aisle) belonging to a local family, Soutra Aisle stands as a poignant reminder of its former glory as well as an enduring symbol of Scottish history. Its presence amidst nature's embrace is reminiscent of a bygone era when life unfolded at a slower pace. Through this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are transported back to the twelfth century when this remarkable institution thrived within these very walls. It invites us to reflect on our shared human experience across generations and marvel at how even ruins can hold such profound stories waiting patiently to be discovered.
