MESSENGER spacecraft at Mercury, artwork C017 / 7337
MESSENGER spacecraft at Mercury, computer artwork. MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) is a robotic NASA spacecraft orbiting the planet Mercury, the first spacecraft ever to do so. It was launched aboard a Delta II rocket in August 2004 with the aim of studying Mercurys chemical composition, geology, and magnetic field. It is equipped with an array of scientific instruments and has solar panels (black) for power generation. The 3.6-metre-long boom carries a magnetometer (lower right) that will be used to map Mercurys magnetic field and search for magnetised rocks in the planets crust. A sunshade (top left) protects the spacecraft from the intense heat of the Sun

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the MESSENGER spacecraft at Mercury, depicted through intricate computer artwork. As the first-ever spacecraft to orbit the planet Mercury, MESSENGER was launched in August 2004 by NASA with a mission to unravel the mysteries of this enigmatic celestial body. Equipped with an array of cutting-edge scientific instruments, MESSENGER aims to study Mercury's chemical composition, geology, and magnetic field. The artwork vividly portrays the spacecraft's features and functionalities. The solar panels in black provide power generation for this technological marvel while a 3.6-meter-long boom extends from its structure carrying a magnetometer on its lower right side. This instrument plays a crucial role in mapping Mercury's magnetic field and identifying magnetized rocks within its crust. To shield itself from the scorching heat emitted by our Sun, MESSENGER is equipped with a sunshade positioned at the top left corner of the image. This protective mechanism ensures that vital components remain unharmed during its exploratory journey around Mercury. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring illustration, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond Earth's boundaries. MESSENGER represents our commitment to pushing scientific boundaries and expanding our understanding of distant worlds within our vast universe. It symbolizes mankind's insatiable curiosity as we continue exploring new frontiers in space exploration throughout the 21st century and beyond.
