A pair of Russian MiG-29 fighters seen taking off. A product of the Mikoyan-Guryevich design bureau, the MiG-29 (NATO reporting name Fulcrum ) is a fourth-generation air superiority fighter. It is powered by two Klimov RD-33 afterburning turbofan jet engines and can reach speeds of Mach 2.25 (2400 km/h) and a ceiling of 18, 000 metres. It is armed with a 30mm cannon and seven hardpoints that can carry missiles, bombs, rocket packs and fuel tanks. The MiG-29 first flew in 1977, entered service in 1983 and over 1600 have been built.
