Minimum-maximum thermometer
Minimum-maximum thermometer designed to float for use in water evaporation measurements. It is used together with a device to measure the level of the water (not seen). The thermometer tracks changes in water temperature that change air pressure in a bulb reservoir and moves a column of liquid. The tube is U-shaped, allowing a scale to be added to both sides and the two levels of the liquid used to track minimum and maximum temperature levels. The U-shaped tube is at centre and the bulbs are under a sunlight shield at upper centre. Markers inside the U-tube, moved in only one direction by the column of liquid, mark the minimum and maximum water temperatures

Environmental Evaporation Floating Maximum Measurement Measuring Meteorological Meteorology Temperature Thermometer Weather Minimum Water Temperature
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of technology known as the minimum-maximum thermometer. Designed specifically for water evaporation measurements, this innovative device is ingeniously crafted to float effortlessly on water surfaces. Although not visible in the image, it works in tandem with another apparatus that measures the water level. The thermometer operates by monitoring fluctuations in water temperature, which subsequently alter air pressure within a bulb reservoir. This change in pressure prompts a column of liquid to move within the U-shaped tube at its center. To accurately track both minimum and maximum temperature levels, scales are added to both sides of the U-tube while markers inside it only move unidirectionally due to the liquid column's influence. Positioned under an upper center sunlight shield, two bulbs provide protection from external elements. The intricate design and functionality of this floating thermometer make it an indispensable tool for meteorological studies and environmental research involving evaporation rates. Captured by Science Photo Library, this image beautifully encapsulates the intersection between technology and nature. It serves as a testament to humanity's continuous quest for scientific knowledge and our ability to create sophisticated equipment that aids us in understanding our world better - particularly when it comes to weather patterns and aquatic environments.
