Nobels oil refinery, artwork
Nobels oil refinery. Computer artwork showing the design of the oil refinery used by the Swedish industrialist Ludvig Immanuel Nobel (1831-1888). An oil refinery is where crude oil, a mixture of hydrocarbons, is refined (separated) in parts called fractions. These are separated by boiling the crude oil in distillation towers (stills, right) called pipestills. The products are then refined and processed further, going through purification, cracking, reforming, and yet more purification stages. Nobel, with his brother Robert, operated extensive oil interests in Baku, in what is now Azerbaijan. Their company, Branobel (founded 1876), became one of the largest oil companies in the world in the late 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork showcases the intricate design of Nobels oil refinery, a significant contribution by Swedish industrialist Ludvig Immanuel Nobel. In this 19th-century masterpiece, we witness the complex process of refining crude oil into various fractions through distillation towers and pipestills. The white background highlights the historical significance of this engineering marvel that revolutionized the petroleum industry. Ludvig Nobel, alongside his brother Robert, established Branobel in 1876, propelling it to become one of the largest oil companies worldwide during that era. Their extensive oil interests in Baku (now Azerbaijan) cemented their status as influential figures in the energy sector. The illustration vividly depicts each step involved in refining crude oil: purification, cracking, reforming, and further purification stages. This technological breakthrough not only transformed how fossil fuels were processed but also shaped Europe's industrial landscape. As we delve into this artwork's intricacies and examine its fractionating column with awe-inspiring detail, we are reminded of Ludvig Immanuel Nobel's legacy as an accomplished oil baron. His visionary approach to energy production continues to inspire generations even today. Let this mesmerizing print transport you back to a time when innovation was at its peak and industrial advancements like Nobels oil refinery forever changed our world.
