Nuclear fusion reactions

Nuclear fusion reactions, computer artwork. These three reactions are being investigated for use in fusion power. Protons are red and neutrons blue. The relative amount of energy produced by a reaction is shown by the size of the pink flare at right. The top reaction is the D-T fuel cycle. A deuterium (D) nucleus fuses with a tritium (T) nucleus, forming a helium (He-4) nucleus and a free neutron. At centre is the D-He3 fuel cycle, in which D fuses with a He-3 nucleus, forming a helium nucleus and a proton. At bottom is the D-D fuel cycle, where two D nuclei fuse to produce He-3 and a neutron. D-T is the easiest, D-He3 produces the most energy. These reactions will be tested by the ITER project, scheduled to begin in 2016

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the fascinating world of nuclear fusion reactions through stunning computer artwork. The image highlights three different reactions that are currently being investigated for potential use in fusion power. Protons, depicted as red particles, and neutrons, represented by blue particles, come together to create an awe-inspiring display of energy. The relative amount of energy produced by each reaction is beautifully illustrated by the size of the pink flare on the right side of the image. At the top, we witness the D-T fuel cycle where a deuterium nucleus fuses with a tritium nucleus to form a helium nucleus and release a free neutron. In the center, we find the D-He3 fuel cycle where deuterium fuses with a He-3 nucleus to generate both a helium nucleus and a proton. Finally, at the bottom lies the D-D fuel cycle where two deuterium nuclei combine to produce He-3 and another neutron. While all three reactions hold promise for fusion power generation, it is revealed that D-He3 produces an impressive amount of energy compared to others. These remarkable reactions will be put to test under ITER project scheduled for launch in 2016—an international endeavor aimed at advancing our understanding and harnessing nuclear fusion's immense potential. Through this visually striking artwork from Science Photo Library, we gain insight into particle physics and subatomic interactions while marveling at humanity's pursuit of clean and sustainable sources of energy.
