This print takes us back to the 19th century, showcasing a remarkable invention known as the cycloscaphe. In this artwork from La Science Illustree, we witness three men aboard a pedal-powered boat, demonstrating an innovative form of transportation. The cycloscaphe was truly ahead of its time, with each man using pedals to turn a chain connected to a propeller beneath the boat's surface. With sixty rotations per minute, this ingenious contraption could generate 500 revolutions of the propeller. Astonishingly efficient for its era, it allowed the boat to cover approximately 7 kilometers in just under 45 minutes. In this scene captured by Louis Figuier, one can observe a coxswain skillfully guiding the vessel while two passengers enjoy their leisurely ride on calm waters. The image showcases not only technological advancement but also highlights gender inclusivity as both men and women are depicted enjoying this novel mode of transport.
