Petrified wood

Petrified wood. Petrified tree logs from the Late Triassic Period (over 206 million years ago). Petrification is a term used to describe the fossilisation of wood. It occurs when pieces of wood fall into sediments and are rapidly covered, preventing normal decay. Over long periods of time the wood decays. As it decays, the wood is replaced by minerals which are deposited from solution in ground water. This forms an exact replica of the original, preserving the texture of the bark and even the growth rings. Photographed in Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable beauty of petrified wood, a fascinating relic from the Late Triassic Period over 206 million years ago. Petrification, a process that occurs when wood falls into sediments and is rapidly covered, prevents its normal decay and leads to an extraordinary transformation. Over time, as the wood decays, minerals from groundwater replace it, creating an exact replica of the original structure. Photographed in the awe-inspiring Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, USA, this image captures nature's artistry at its finest. The texture of the bark and even growth rings are exquisitely preserved in these petrified tree logs. Each log tells a story of ancient botanical life and offers insights into prehistoric biology and paleontology. The rugged landscape surrounding these fossilized remnants adds to their allure. This photograph not only transports us back to North America's prehistory but also serves as a testament to Earth's geological history. As we gaze upon this stunning visual representation of petrified wood by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of our planet's incredible ability to preserve fragments from millions of years ago. It ignites our curiosity about what other secrets lie buried beneath layers of time and encourages us to explore further into the mysteries held within Earth's ancient past.
