Phases of the Moon
Phases of the Moon, computer artwork. The surface of the Moon moves in and out of sunlight, as shown by the phases of the Moon. Clockwise from upper centre, the Moon waxes in the lunar dawn, growing from a New Moon to its First Quarter and then to a Full Moon. Then, the Moon wanes as the lunar night descends, shrinking from gibbous through Last Quarter to a thin crescent. Only one side of the Moon faces Earth because tidal forces between the Earth and the Moon cause the Moon to be tidally locked. This means that the time it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth is the same as the time taken for the Moon to rotate on its axis
