Red-winged parrot
Red-winged parrot. Museum specimen of a male red- winged parrot (Aprosmictus erythropterus) as seen in ultraviolet (UV) light. This species is native to Australia and Papua New Guinea. Both genders have red wings and a bright green body. The male bird has a blue patch on its back that shows strong UV reflectivity (white) when viewed using a camera adapted to filter through and detect only UV light waves. Areas with less UV-reflectivity appear dark blue to black. Birds are able to see normal colours and UV parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. This allows them to view markings that are invisible to human eyes. (See image Z860/061 for parrot viewed in normal light)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a male Red-winged parrot, a stunning species native to Australia and Papua New Guinea. The vibrant image reveals the bird's mesmerizing plumage in ultraviolet (UV) light, highlighting its red wings and bright green body. However, it is the blue patch on the bird's back that truly steals the show under UV illumination. When viewed through a camera specially adapted to filter and detect only UV light waves, this patch appears as a striking white color due to its strong UV reflectivity. Birds possess an extraordinary ability to see both normal colors and parts of the electromagnetic spectrum that are invisible to human eyes. This unique vision allows them to perceive markings that remain hidden from us. By studying their perception of UV light, researchers gain valuable insights into avian biology and behavior. The photo was taken at Alexander Koenig Research Museum of Zoology where this exquisite museum specimen is displayed alongside other fascinating wildlife exhibits. Through taxidermy techniques, this stuffed Red-winged parrot serves as an educational tool for visitors interested in ornithology and zoology. With its intricate feathers and remarkable markings visible only under UV light, this image captures not only the beauty but also sheds light on the incredible world of avian vision research.
